Each year, Former First Lady, Mrs. Barbara Bush, hosts a literacy video conference from the George Bush Presidential Library at TAMU. Students from all over Texas and the United States (and even Canada!) tune in to listen to her read, answer questions, and talk about the importance of reading. This year, a teacher from my school was invited as a speaker and several of our students were invited to be participants on the stage, and many others were guests in the auditorium during the event. We were all VERY excited!!!
She is one sharp cookie and read an excerpt from a book about presidential elections. She answered questions from our students on the stage, as well as from students in the video audience!
At the end, she greeted the participating students and thanked them for their attendance. They presented her with flowers!
When the conference was over and the audience was leaving, the invited guests (including me!) got to go backstage and meet Mrs. Bush. She and I chatted for a short bit about libraries and being a librarian.
I was so proud of our students; they did a fantastic job at the event and represented our school, district and city very well! Jessica also did a super job with her keynote speech. It was such an honor to be there with them, and, of course, it was a complete honor to meet Mrs. Bush!
